When your dog is under the weather, it’s not always clear what is wrong with him or her. The first signs might not be obvious, like them having a little accident that needs clearing up. It might be a dullness in their eyes that wasn’t there before, they don’t want to play fetch (and they never turn that down) or they’re off their food.
It’s not necessarily immediately clear what’s wrong. After all, they could have eaten something off the ground when they were running in the park and that’ll continue to upset their stomach until they pass it. A few days and it might clear up, but it also might be indicative of a problem that isn’t going away any time soon.
Make Them Comfortable
When you’re thinking about how to help a sick dog, the first thing to do is to keep them isolated in a warm area that’s safe and comfortable. You do not want outside factors to further affect their outlook. If they’re not making it to their doggie bed, find where they’ve chosen to sleep and put some blankets down there or move their doggie bed to the place they’re spending time while feeling poorly (you can move it back later).
Check the area to ensure it’s clear of dangerous substancesand things they might lick or try to ingest. They may have picked the place in the home, but that doesn’t mean it’s ideal.
Do a Little Self-Diagnostic
Is there anything obvious with them that’s out of the ordinary? Do they have a distended stomach or are having difficulty moving their neck? Is there an obvious injury like a dog bite or a cut perhaps from a thorny branch?
Once you’ve ruled out obvious things, consider how their behavior has changed recently. For instance, they’re not drinking much water, they go to the toilet less often or have a redness to their urine. If your dog is coughing a lot, their breathing isn’t clear, they’re shaking their head around a lot or they have red urine, then take them to the vet immediately for an urgent appointment.
Don’t Self-medicate Your Dog
Human medicine like paracetamol is dangerous to dogs. Have they gotten into the medical supply and ingested something? Make sure that you don’t give them medicine in the home because it could be harmful to them. Even deadly.
If you’ve reached the point where they’re not improving after a day and you feel medical intervention is required, see your vet. Then complete whatever treatment protocol they prescribe.
Regular Supplementation Avoids Health Problems
Consider using a quality pet supplement that will help them with their issues. If they’re having immune system, mobility or kidney problems, then supplementation can assist them in staying well. There are also supplements for senior dogs that need more assistance with their joints and organs to live longer.
When your dog becomes poorly, it’s worrisome for everyone. However, when taking the appropriate steps, you can provide useful information to your vet which helps them correctly diagnose the problem sooner. Mindful owners save their pet from living in discomfort when they don’t need to.
