Cats are such adorable pets that you would want to have more in your house. They are cute and are like the ultimate cuddling item you have. However, they spread nuisance too and you cannot ignore that. It is easy to see how wonderful addition they are to your family, but at the end of the day, you would have to clean the mess that they create. Spraying is one of the most common mishaps that cats cause and it is almost impossible to avoid. If you are not aware of what spraying is and think that your cat is just littering around, then you better have a clear understanding of it. Cat spraying is when your cat urinates on walls or any other vertical surface instead of doing the same thing in the litter box. The term spraying has been given because cats tend to spray their urine on the vertical surface. Cats normally squat while urinating, but when they are spraying, they will urinate much lesser urine. There are various reasons why cats tend to spray. Here are some of the reasons given below.
Communicating with other cats
In order to understand why cats spray, you would have to know how cats communicate. One of the main reasons cat spraying is because they want to communicate with other cats or with other animals. By spraying indoors, cats leave their scent for other animals or cats to understand. In fact, it is also one way of demarcating an area. When a cat sprays in a certain area, it means that he/she is indicating the other cats that it is his/her territory. Spraying on walls, furniture and boxes is really common when your cat is trying to claim a territory. This is nothing serious, but just a few ways in which cats play amongst themselves.
Defense mechanism
There are times when cats get scared or threatened by other cats and animals. This is another reason why cats spray indoors. When they are threatened, they will constantly rub their body against the wall or any furniture. Along with this, he/she would spray their urine. The frequency of spraying will increase when this happens. When you see that your cat is spraying like this, you need to quickly see if there are any nearby animals that are causing this panic in the cat. This often happens when a cat sees a big dog or there is a dog in the neighborhood or if your neighbor has got a god or some other animal.
Environmental changes
Although, this is not that common, but is another reason why there is cat spraying indoors. When there are too many changes in the environment, it causes cats to panic. That is why you will see that when you have rearranged your furniture or may have moved your cat’s house to a new place, they will spray around the house. It takes some time for cats to get used to the changes. This is the reason why environmental changes result in cats spraying indoors.
